Tucked away in the backstreets of Willunga, what was once a humble three- bedroom home has been transformed into a coastal retreat, one that balances material honesty with timeless warmth. Anchored in the strength of local stone and elevated by the precision of modern building practices, the home is both an ode to its past and a considered leap into the next chapter of its life – and that of its owners Jacqui and Jake Kearsley.

Kaurna, Narungga and Ngarrindjeri artist and curator, Carly Tarkari Dodd recalls the moment when art and making started to take on a deeper meaning for her. She was at Camp Coorong near Meningie with her family. It was there she met Ngarrindjeri artist Aunty Ellen Trevorrow, a world-renowned cultural weaver. Camp Coorong is a cultural learning centre at Meningie, South Australia, established in 1985 to promote understanding of Ngarrindjeri history, language and traditions.

‘Everything you can see in this house has been repurposed,’ announces Mark Longhurst – better known as Longy – with a grin that spreads from his eyes down to his paint-splattered, steel-capped sneakers. ‘It’s been a labour of love.’ Beside him, his wife Margot smiles. They stand together on the threshold of their recently completed home in Chiton. As they step back to welcome me into this timber sanctuary, I catch a view all the way out to the trees beyond.

Australia’s east coast has Lennox and Burleigh and Fremantle captures WA’s coastal charm, then surely Port Noarlunga is South Australia’s answer to a laid-back seaside suburb where food, wine and culture come together? Or maybe that’s just my local bias talking. Either way, let me show you why ‘Porties’, as we locals call it, is well worth a day trip, or better yet, the perfect home base for a full Fleurieu weekend escape.

This photo shoot was about celebrating the creative forces shaping community, wellbeing and connection in our region. All our models fit this criteria, coming from artistic and/or wellbeing focused backgrounds. We chose Kieren Kuzyk’s Small Circle Co-op for the location and featured garments and accessories from Mist, Morocco by Mish, Gorgeous Soles, South Seas Trading, Fossick Made and Found, Gypsy Life and Miss Gladys on Sea.

As I enter Ashley Bastian’s home studio, my eyes are drawn immediately to a collection of large vases on the opposite wall. Their textured, raw surfaces make a strong statement against the modern aesthetic of her home. I hesitate as I reach out to touch one of their delicate layered exteriors, but Ashley kindly encourages me to interact with its tactile qualities. The pieces summon the muted tones and textures of the Fleurieu coastline indoors, reminiscent of the Hallet Cove Conservation Park at the end of Ashley’s street – a place she and her family frequent daily and a constant source of inspiration for her work.
